What is Powder Coating?

Powder coating is a finishing process in which dry powder is electrostatically applied to surfaces, then cured under heat to form a layer.  Unlike traditional wet paint, powder coating does not require solvents, resulting in a more uniform, durable and high-quality finish.

Powder coating process:

  • Preparation – every item is thoroughly cleaned and pre-treated to ensure maximum adhesion.
  • Application – the powder is applied to the product using an electrostatic gun ensuring an even coat.
  • Curing – the coated items are then placed in a curing oven, heated to around 200 degrees C, causing the powder to melt, flow and form a smooth durable finish.

Advantages of Powder Coating:

  • Durability – creates a hard finish that is tougher than conventional wet paint, making it resistant to scratching, chipping and wear.
  • Efficiency – powder coating is a one-coat finish, meaning faster turnaround times.
  • Environmentally Friendly – lacks the volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) found in wet paints, making it environmentally friendly.
  • Versatile – suitable for a wide range of applications.

The components can be powder coated to virtually any RAL number you require, with differing gloss levels, from vibrant colours to make your product stand out to subtle colours for a refined look.

Powder coated products offer enhanced durability, withstand impact, moisture, UV light and extreme weather conditions, ensuring long lasting quality and appearance.

Powder Coating related FAQ’s

What is powder coating?2026-06-16T11:01:36+00:00

Powder coating is a dry finishing process used to apply a durable, protective, and decorative coating to metal (mild steel, galvanised, aluminium). A fine powder (made of resin, pigments and additives) is sprayed onto the surface using an electrostatic gun. The powder particles become electrically charged and stick to the grounded object. The powder is then cured in an oven where the powder melts, flows and hardens into a smooth, durable finish.

What are the advantages of powder coating?2026-06-16T11:01:15+00:00

It is more durable than many liquid paints. It is resistant to chipping, scratching, fading and corrosion. It is available in an almost infinite range of colours and texture. It is environmentally friendly (contains little or no solvents). It provides and even, attractive finish.

What materials can be powder coated?2026-06-16T11:00:50+00:00

Powder coating works best on materials that can hold an electrical charge during application and withstand the curing temperature without being damaged. Commonly powder coated materials include steel (mild steel, carbon steel), aluminium, galvanised steel, cast iron, stainless steel, and some copper, brass and other metal alloys.

What are the limitations of powder coating?2026-06-16T11:00:21+00:00

The main limitation is the size of the component to be powder coated for handling purposes and whether it will fit inside the curing oven. To enable the powder to be applied, the component needs to be hung from a frame, so if there are no hanging points on the component itself, small hanging holes will need to be made in the component to enable it to be hung for painting. In addition, powder coating does not hide poor surface conditions very well, such as rust, oil contamination and dents/scratches.
